Disability and Happiness: a story of perception and resilience

Can people with disabilities be happy?

I’ve been asked this question several times, and each time, I take a moment to smile and reflect on this idea, as it’s filled with assumptions.

The real question to ask, in my opinion, is: “Why wouldn’t they be?”

Happiness, like disability, isn’t a box you step in or out of. It’s a state of mind, a personal construction, a way of facing life with its challenges, beauties, and surprises.

Yes, people with disabilities can be truly happy.

Our happiness is shaped by our resilience, our ability to overcome the visible and invisible barriers that society often places in our path.

Throughout this journey, I’ve learned that my happiness isn’t defined by my disability, but by the way I:

– Approach the world,
– Cultivate gratitude,
– Accept my vulnerabilities,
– And value my strengths.

Being well-groomed, well-made-up, and well-dressed only reflects this inner harmony, this joy of life that I have chosen, despite prejudices and obstacles.

So yes, I am disabled.
And yes, I am profoundly happy.

Let’s cultivate the diversity of life experiences, and never underestimate anyone’s ability to build their own happiness.
